You may be like me, I used to be a little sceptical about using natural deodorant. At least I was, until I discovered some great brands and also really began to understand the health benefits, and then ultimately, tried it out for myself!
I’m not here to tell you that switching to natural deodorant is the solution for everyone - as each and every body is different - but I do think there is a huge advantage to making the switch, namely for the positive impact on your health and also, the environment.
Why Sweat It?
Before I discuss the pros of switching, you may want to understand the difference – why is using natural deodorant versus an antiperspirant any different? Well, the main difference that I have found in my own research, as well as practical hands-on testing – is that antiperspirant prevents your body from the natural process of sweating. I know many of you may be thinking, “but that’s great!” – and yeah, who LOVES to sweat? *ahem* not me. But here’s why blocking your body from sweating is actually not a good thing.
The purpose of our body’s natural sweating process, is to regulate our body temperature enabling us to cool down when we’re overheated, and on top of this, it also helps our bodies to naturally expel toxins that we are exposed to in our daily lives. This detoxification is a very important process for regulating our bodies and supporting our immune function. And although we also need to control our armpit bacteria, (because let’s be real, no one wants to be the smelly person in the room), it shouldn’t come at the expense of blocking this natural and very important process. So the message here is – sweating aint a bad thing!
Is Your Daily Deodorant Routine Doing More Harm Than Good?
Next – a lot of conventional antiperspirant deodorants have a lot of hidden nasties in them, that when used daily for long periods of time, may not be the best idea for our bodies. For example aluminium (which blocks the sweat gland). Aluminium compounds can be absorbed by your skin and it is said that these compounds may mimic oestrogen and be linked to dangerous cell growth. This has prompted scientists to study potential links between breast cancer and the use of aluminium-based deodorants. Parabens are also a common ingredient that can be found in many popular cosmetics and antiperspirants. Similarly to aluminium compounds, parabens can also be absorbed by the skin are said to upset the body’s hormonal balance and mimic oestrogen. Other potentially harmful ingredients may include triclosan, propylene glycol, phthalates and more.
Just like other products we use on our skin, we need to be mindful of what we are asking our bodies to put up with. Unfortunately, a lot of mainstream deodorants may contain ingredients that aren’t regulated properly by health authorities, so it’s always a personal choice about what risk you find acceptable for your own body. Alternatively, natural deodorants contain no nasty toxins or harmful chemicals. The list of ingredients is generally short and very easy to understand. For example you might see common ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil or sodium bicarbonate in many natural deodorants. You can also safely assume that most ingredients in natural deodorant are GOOD for you.
If this is the first time you’re reading about the health concerns around using conventional antiperspirant deodorants, don't panic! Our bodies are incredibly capable of detoxing and regenerating, and it’s never too late to make the switch.
Why We Recommend Wild Belle 100% Natural Deodorant
Deodorant can be a very personal choice, so you may wish to shop around and find the brand that is the right fit for you. For those of you who might be looking for a recommendation – we have found a pretty special Australian made brand called Wild Belle deodorant. Casey, the owner and maker behind Wild Belle, is based in Ballarat (Victoria) and makes her vegan-friendly deodorant in small batches using high quality ingredients including pure, therapeutic grade essential oils. Her water resistant formula won't sweat away easily so you can trust you'll be odour free for up to 12 hours! She offers a variety of scents to please even the fussiest of people, and she has even had customers report reduced sweating because their body no longer needs to detox nasty chemicals from their armpits.
A lot of natural deodorants contain bicarb as it is a wonderful antibacterial ingredient, but unfortunately many of these deodorants can give me an itchy rash! So if you’re sensitive like me, you may need a low-bicarb option. Her Luscious Lavender (Low Bicarb) smells divine and is the right level of bicarb for my skin. However she also offers a Sensitive Bicarb Free Deodorant Balm which is perfect for very sensitive skin (and like all Wild Belle deodorants, it smells deliciously edible).
Once you have tried and tested Wild Belle deodorant (and we are pretty confident you will love it as much as we do), we recommend trying their compostable Eco Bulk Packs. The packaging can be composted in your home compost bin, and you can simply decant the deodorant into your own jars. One pack should last you around 6 months. We are able to order the bulk packs in any Wild Belle fragrance you like, so please don't hesitate to get in touch! We currently stock the popular Luscious Lavender.
Is It Time to Make the Switch?
We've spoken about the effects of harmful chemicals on our health, but what about the environment? Products that contain harmful chemicals can also have a negative impact on our environment.
During manufacture, nasty chemicals can end up in the air and water, not to mention what washes down the drain in our own bathrooms. These chemicals often end up in our waterways and soil, and can have detrimental impacts on microorganisms and sea life.
Switching to a good quality natural deodorant not only allows our bodies to breathe, sweat and detox, but with the right brand you can stay fresh smelling all day long without the use of harmful chemicals. So why not support an ethical brand that you can really trust, and know exactly what you are putting in your body. Is it time to make the switch?
